The Munich II Research Reactor (FRM-II) has been operated with weapon-grade, highly enriched uranium (HEU) since the start of operation. International efforts over the last four decades have been made to make the abandonment of HEU for research reactors globally enforceable – in particular by resorting to or developing high-density low-enriched fuels (LEU). For various reasons, the question of adequate treatment of spent fuel elements and conversion of the reactor from HEU to LEU is becoming more topical.
The related questions of the National Monitoring Committee will be answered according to the state of the art in science and technology.
